*** A GREAT DAY HAD BY ALL ***

*** A GREAT DAY HAD BY ALL ***

Wayne Gates8 Jun 2024 - 14:58

Our u7's host their first-ever tournament - and it went down a storm!

It was an early one that's for sure. With the Moss Park pitch freshly trimmed and looking lush, Jack and the lads had been down last night and again at 7.30am this morning - so as people started arriving, it looked set for a great tournament of u7's football. Albeit with our u6's Blacks entered as well. There were teams from far and wide coming over for this - and overnight, we also heard that there were quite a few Pro Club scouts that seemed to be interested in this as well. We were all looking forward to it...

Sixteen teams had entered so we had decided to go with a Group section first - four teams of four - and the top two from each section would then go on to compete in the 'Champions League ' whilst the teams that finished 3rd and 4th would go into the Europa League. Considering this was the first-time the boys had organised such a large tournament, it seemed to be running sweet - with all 16 teams registered well before the first kick-off time. A massive thanks straight away to Club Captain Alex Williams and 1st-team player Callum Keegan - along with the brilliant Mason and Rob - for choosing to be the match officials for us today and we can say you did us proud from the first whistle until the last. The sections were arranged and at 9am on the dot, we were off...

Some fantastic football was played by all of the kids out there this morning and with the weather being as temperamental as usual - raining one minute and then blazing sunshine the next - the results came rolling in. Obviously Wrighti - our Chairman - was looking as them as they flowed in and kept cheering each time a United team did well - but when the group sections were over, it saw Deans Sports, our u6 Blacks, our u7 Blacks, Med Falcons and De La Salle in the Champions League and we then saw Oxford Grove, FC Strikerz Ninjas, Woodbank and Shawclough in the Europa League. Time for a drink and a short break....

We were exhausted just watching them! But there was still a lot of football to be played - as now it was into the knock-out stages. The Champions League section threw up some fascinating contests - as did the Europa League - and with us being us, we decided that we wanted to give loads of trophies and medals away - so we went straight for four Finals rather than a semi-final! That meant that we saw our u7's Blacks taking on Meds Falcons, our u6's Blacks taking on Deans Sports, Woodbank v Shawclough and then FC Strikerz Ninjas v. Irlam. That provided four absolutely fantastic games of football and two of which went to spot-kicks - both involving the United teams. Unfortunately our u7's just came short when their keeper made a great save to deny but on the pitch next to that, our u6's Blacks won their shoot-out and were going to be picking up the trophy! How cool is that?

All in all, it was a really good day and we hope you all thoroughly enjoyed it. Sure - there were some teething problems - but can you imagine how good this will be next season when we put all them right?

We want to thank all of the players, parents and supporters of the 16 teams that came down this morning and we hope you enjoyed your visit to Moss Park. There was some great talent on display out on that pitch and we're really pleased to say that the Liverpool FC has formally approached us to speak to two of the kids wearing our tops - so we'll nurture that talent and work with the pro's to ensure that they are treated properly. Hopefully there were other kids spoken to because as we say, there were some very, very good players even at these tender ages...

And that was that. The trophies and medals were awarded and as people started to depart, so the Clubhouse began to fill up. That's what we like to see eh?

Until next year, we just want to shout-out to Jack and the lads for putting this on today as from where we were sat, it looked like it went really well. Nice one chaps - we're proud of you...
