Breightmet United 4 - Haslingden Thunder 0
Breightmet United continued their unbeaten run with a strong performance against Haslingden Thunder, despite challenging conditions. The pitch was quite muddy, making movement more difficult and draining on the legs, while the cold added another test of endurance for both teams.
Mass changes to the front line meant several players had to step up and take on new roles. Breightmet dominated possession and kept the pressure firmly in Haslingden’s half, but an early breakthrough proved elusive. Two fantastic saves in quick succession by the Haslingden goalkeeper kept the game goalless, denying Breightmet a deserved lead.
The relentless pressure finally paid off when Lila delivered a pinpoint cross into the box, and Grace Bick was on hand to calmly slot the ball into the back of the net. That opening goal brought a sigh of relief, settling nerves that it might turn into “one of those days.” Despite further chances and continued dominance, the first half ended with Breightmet holding a 1-0 lead.
The second half saw the Eagles shift into a higher gear, adapting well to the muddy pitch. Receiving the ball on the left wing, Scarlett surged past the opposition midfield and right-back before unleashing a powerful strike that flew into the net. It was a goal of such quality that even the Haslingden bench applauded. Just two minutes later, Scarlett found herself in possession once again and placed the ball into the same spot, securing a brace in quick succession.
As the game approached the final minutes, Grace found herself in another promising position. Spotting the keeper off the line, she cleverly chipped the ball over before racing around to tap it home, putting the result beyond doubt.
It was a relatively quiet day for the defence and goalkeeper, but their composure ensured another clean sheet—Breightmet’s seventh of the season. The difficult conditions made the win even more impressive, showing the team’s resilience and determination to keep their excellent form going.
