It’s squeaky bum time in the title race – and Sunday morning’s trip to East Leigh had all the tension, drama, and intensity you’d expect at this stage of the season. Breightmet United came into the game two points clear at the top, with just two matches left to play. But with Heyside still hot on their heels, and Moss Bank holding three games in hand, the race for the title is far from over.

The first 20 minutes were nervy and cagey. Both sides struggled to find rhythm, and the pressure of the occasion was clear across the pitch. Every touch was contested, every pass overthought – no one wanted to make the first mistake.

Unfortunately, it was Breightmet who were hit by a slice of misfortune. In the 27th minute, a corner into the box created chaos. The ball took an awkward deflection and squeezed through the defender and the near post. A frustrating goal to concede, and one that sent Breightmet into half-time trailing 1-0.

But if there’s one thing this team has shown all season, it’s character. After the break, Breightmet came out with more urgency, pressing higher and showing greater intent. They started to win battles in midfield and created more openings, while remaining solid at the back. East Leigh were still a threat on the break, but Isla was superb in goal – alert, commanding, and brave when called upon.

The equaliser came with 15 minutes to play. Scarlett picked up the ball on the left, danced past two East Leigh defenders with confidence, and whipped in a brilliant cross. Maicie, always alert, timed her run perfectly and finished with composure to bring the game level. A moment of quality and determination when it was needed most.

Breightmet pushed hard for a winner in the final 10 minutes. Lila and Niamh both went close, while Lucy and Lottie provided endless support down the flanks, combining defensive work with attacking energy. The momentum was with Breightmet, but time ran out before they could find a second goal.

At the final whistle, it finished 1-1 – a fair result in a fiercely contested match. It keeps Breightmet top, but the final weekend is now set up for a thrilling finish.

Next up: a must-win game against Moss Bank. Heyside still have to face East Leigh, and with Moss Bank still in the mix thanks to their three games in hand, the title race remains wide open. It’s well and truly squeaky bum time.
