Breightmet United 2 - 2 Heyside Juniors
Last-second goal saves Eagles’ unbeaten record!
Breightmet United kept their unbeaten run alive in spectacular fashion, earning a dramatic 2-2 draw against top-of-the-league rivals Heyside Juniors. It was a game full of grit, determination, and resilience as the Eagles fought back from a 2-0 deficit to secure a point in the dying moments.
The match got off to an eventful start even before kick-off, as poor Isla managed to headbutt the goalpost during the warm-up, leaving everyone wondering if she was trying to take it out before the game had even begun! Despite the knock, Isla soldiered on, determined to defend her goal—and she was called upon more than once to make crucial saves.
The game itself was played in challenging conditions, with winds so strong they could have come with a “danger to life” warning! Parents clung to their umbrellas on the sidelines, and at one point, it seemed like the ball might take flight. Although a home fixture the Eagles found themselves playing away from New House Farm and at the same time faced a tough opponent in Heyside Juniors and things quickly took a turn for the worse. Just 3 minutes into the game, Heyside found the back of the net, leaving Breightmet reeling. Despite dominating possession and playing much of the first half in Heyside’s half, the Eagles couldn’t break through a well-organised defence. Then, to compound matters, Heyside doubled their lead on 25 minutes after a swift counterattack, giving them a 2-0 advantage going into the break.
Breightmet’s defence, led by Molly and Libby, had to work tirelessly to keep the scoreline from getting worse, with both players making crucial clearances as Heyside threatened on the break. At halftime, the Eagles found themselves in a tough spot, down by two goals and facing an uphill battle.
The second half, however, was a different story. With renewed energy and determination, Breightmet took control of the game, pushing Heyside back into their own half. Although chances were being created, they frustratingly went begging. Macie, in particular, had several near-misses, leaving supporters holding their breath and wondering if this might be the game that ended Breightmet’s unbeaten streak. Isla, undeterred by her earlier collision, kept the Eagles in the game with a spectacular save from a Heyside free kick, stopping the ball from soaring into the top corner.
Finally, on 63 minutes, Breightmet got their reward. A brilliant through ball was played into Macie’s path, and she made no mistake this time, calmly finishing to bring the Eagles back into the game. The goal lifted the entire team, and the momentum shifted completely. Breightmet pressed relentlessly, creating more chances as they searched for the equaliser.
With the game ticking into its final moments, it looked as if time had run out. But in a moment of pure drama, Lila—sporting her flashy new Adidas boots (the contract details with Adidas remain undisclosed ?)—popped up in the last seconds of the match, slotting the ball into the back of the net and sparking wild celebrations among the Breightmet players and supporters. Her goal salvaged a vital point and kept the Eagles’ unbeaten record intact.
Coaches’ Player of the Match was awarded to Libby for her outstanding defensive display and her ability to adapt to the advice from the coaches.
Parents’ Player of the Match was shared between Isla, who pulled off several crucial saves (post-headbutt and all!) to keep Breightmet in the game, and Miley, who once again dominated the midfield with her excellent vision and passing.
Players’ Player of the Match was given to Lila, not only for her last-minute equaliser but for her relentless work throughout the game.
Breightmet United remain top of the league as they head into the half-term break, undefeated and full of confidence after yet another thrilling comeback.
